WHAT IS S.T.E.A.M.?

Learning Through Curiosity, Creativity and Discovery

STEAM is an educational approach that brings together Science, Technology, Engineering, Art and Math. Instead of teaching these subjects separately, STEAM encourages children to use skills from multiple areas to investigate questions, develop ideas and solve meaningful problems.

STEAM learning is active. Children do more than listen or memorize information. They ask questions, make predictions, build models, test solutions, observe results and try again. This hands-on process helps children understand how learning connects to the world around them.

What Does STEAM Stand For?

Science

Science encourages children to observe, investigate and ask questions about the natural and physical world. Children learn to make predictions, conduct experiments and use evidence to understand what happened.

Technology

Technology includes the tools and processes people use to solve problems. For children, this may involve simple machines, digital tools, coding, robotics or learning how different tools help us complete a task.

Engineering

Engineering challenges children to design, build, test and improve solutions. Whether they are constructing a bridge, creating a marble run or designing a vehicle, children learn that the first attempt does not have to be the final one.

Art

Art brings creativity, imagination and communication into the learning process. Children use design, color, storytelling and creative expression to explore ideas and develop original solutions.

Math

Math helps children measure, compare, count, identify patterns, analyze information and make decisions. Through hands-on activities, children discover that math is a useful tool for understanding and solving real-world problems.

STEM and STEAM: What Is the Difference?

STEM focuses on science, technology, engineering and math. STEAM includes those same subjects while intentionally adding art and design.

The addition of art encourages children to think creatively, communicate ideas and consider different ways to approach a challenge. It helps children understand that problem-solving is not always about finding one correct answer. Sometimes the strongest solution comes from combining logic, imagination and thoughtful design.

Why Is STEAM Important?

Building Strong Problem-Solvers

STEAM activities give children opportunities to work through challenges instead of simply being given an answer. They learn to identify a problem, consider possible solutions, select materials, test an idea and make changes based on what they observe.

When a tower falls or an experiment does not work as expected, the learning is not over. Children are encouraged to examine what happened, adjust their approach and try again. This process builds perseverance and teaches children that mistakes can be valuable steps toward discovery.

Strengthening Critical-Thinking Skills

STEAM learning encourages children to look closely, ask thoughtful questions and make decisions using evidence. Rather than accepting information without exploring it, children learn to think about how and why something works.

Through experiments and challenges, children practice:

  • Making observations

  • Asking questions

  • Predicting outcomes

  • Comparing possible solutions

  • Identifying patterns

  • Testing ideas

  • Evaluating results

  • Explaining their thinking

These critical-thinking skills support learning across every subject and help children become more confident, independent thinkers.

Encouraging Peer Collaboration

Many STEAM challenges are designed for children to explore and solve together. Working with peers teaches children how to listen to different ideas, communicate their thinking, share materials and contribute to a common goal.

Children may approach the same challenge in very different ways. Collaboration helps them recognize that every person can bring a valuable idea, skill or perspective to the group. They learn how to discuss disagreements, combine ideas and support one another throughout the learning process.

These experiences help children develop communication, teamwork and leadership skills that are important in school, future careers and everyday life.

Developing Creativity and Confidence

STEAM gives children permission to experiment and create. There may be many possible ways to solve a problem, which allows children to make choices and develop original ideas.

As children see their ideas take shape, they begin to trust their ability to learn and solve problems. Each successful experiment, improved design or completed challenge helps build confidence. Even when an idea does not work, children learn that they are capable of adapting and trying again.

What Does Hands-On STEAM Learning Look Like?

Hands-on STEAM learning can include:

  • Conducting science experiments

  • Designing and building bridges, towers or vehicles

  • Exploring animals, weather, space and the natural world

  • Creating art inspired by scientific ideas

  • Testing which materials work best for a challenge

  • Building with blocks, magnets and recycled materials

  • Investigating motion, light, sound and energy

  • Solving age-appropriate engineering challenges

  • Working with peers to plan and improve a design

  • Asking questions and sharing discoveries

The goal is not simply to complete an activity. The goal is to help children think, explore, communicate and discover throughout the entire process.

How YES! Makes STEAM Meaningful

At Yavapai Exploration and Science (YES!), we believe children learn best when they are actively involved in the experience. Our programs provide welcoming opportunities for children to explore ideas, use real materials and learn through hands-on discovery.

Our experienced, licensed educators guide children through engaging activities while encouraging them to ask questions, make choices and develop their own solutions. Instead of focusing only on the final product, we celebrate the thinking, collaboration and persistence that happen along the way.

YES! offers STEAM learning through:

  • Early Explorers Learning Lab experiences

  • Instructor-led STEAM Labs

  • Seasonal STEAM camps

  • Field trips at the YES! Exploration Center

  • In-school programs and assemblies

  • Community events and educational outreach

  • Birthday parties with hands-on STEAM activities

Each program is designed to make learning accessible, engaging and fun while helping children grow into curious, creative and confident problem-solvers.

Every Child Can Be a STEAM Learner

Children do not need previous experience or special knowledge to participate in STEAM. They simply need the opportunity to wonder, explore and try.

At YES!, we create experiences where children can follow their curiosity, learn alongside others and discover what they are capable of accomplishing. Through hands-on STEAM learning, children develop skills that help them succeed in school, connect with their peers and approach future challenges with confidence.

Explore. Learn. Grow.
